Last night the animals couldn’t sleep at all, not with all that noise. Brrr....Brrrr...was all they could hear. Pippo had decided to make a stop to all this chaos. Pippo was a takahe. A takahe is an endangered native bird. He had sleek, green and blue feathers, bright orange feet and a sharp red beak. He headed through the forest where the animals had heard the sound coming from. The forest was eerily quiet, all he could hear was the rustling of the leaves and and crackling of the twigs and branches he was stepping on. Pippo was starting to get scared, and right back to meadow “No, no, I can’t”, Pippo whispered to himself. He couldn’t, he simply couldn’t. All of is family were depending on him. If he ran back, they would think he was a scaredy cat who could not even walk through the forest. Finally he came to the end of the forest but everything had changed.
Construction had begun. Cranes and bull-dozers were destroying everything. All the trees were being chopped down. Humans were building something. There were men in yellow hard hats wearing bright orange jackets. On the jacket, Pippo could make out the word, ‘RESORT’. They were building a resort. They could not do this. Takahe are endangered, there isn’t many of them
left.Their habitat would be destroyed. What would they do? Pippo had to warn the others.
Pippo raced through the forest, his heart beating a million times a minute. He was gasping for air. “We have to stop them”, said Pippo urging them to come and see. “Son, it’s too dangerous, we could be killed”, replied Pippo’s father. We have to try and stop them, thought Pippo. He could not sleep at all. He tried to think of a plan. Though all of them were failures. They would never succeed.
The next morning, Pippo had a plan. The secret of all animals was that they could talk. Their secret must never be revealed to the humans. So when humans come, the takahe just make squawking noises. The plan was that they would tell the boss, Cari Mellow of the construction of the resort their secret and tell them that they couldn’t build here. He would also tell the boss to never breath a word about their secret. It was risky though. he explained this to his family. We would also make her live with us. But they all disagreed. “We can never tell them”, his family shouted to him. Finally, Pippo managed to convince them it was their only thing that they could do.
At around midday, the group set out to the forest and to chair were they could see the boss sitting. “ Excuse me”, Pippo muttered. The woman was shocked and nearly fainted. She wore dark blue denim jeans, a bright orange jacket and was holding a red megaphone in her hand. She also had this very stern and mean look on her face. “ We are the takahe living here, yes we can talk. You cannot destroy the forest because we will have no food.” Mrs. Mellow did not say anything but nodded her head.
She was going to stop the construction of the resort. Then she thought that she could capture the talking animals and make a fortune. First she had to trap them. They made her live with them and of course she said yes so she could be rich and famous. The animals were so foolish. Cari led them straight into a trap. The animals were collecting fruit and berries for next season and she told them that she some great nuts over in that meadow. All the animals walked straight into a net.
Cari put them in the boot of her car and drove into town. When she got to town, she told everyone. She even put up posters and starred in advertisements saying she discovered the first talking animals. Luckily, Pippo and the animals had a plan. They would not say a word. She got the net of animals out in front of the t.v camera. “Look, everyone, talking animals!”
The animals kept their mouths shut and just made random squawking noises. The humans did not believe Cari and said that she just wanted attention. Everyone thought she was going crazy as she tried to protest. The animals wee then released back into the wild and the construction of the resort ended. Finally, Pippo was glad to be home. Home sweet home. “Three cheers for Pippo”, yelled Pippo’s father. “Hip, hip hoorah!’, shouted the very happy animals.
