What do you think will happen in 2012? Well, on the solstice on December 21, 2012 at precisely at 11:11 AM Universal Time marks the completion of the 5,125 year Great Cycle of the Ancient Maya Long Count Calendar.

You can find countless theories about what's supposed to happen in 2012 from doom and enlightenment to absolutely nothing. Some say that on an ancient Mayan calendar 2012 points to the end of the world: they pick December 21 2012 as the exact day as that is when the calender ends.

Others speak of a Nostradamus 2012 doomsday prediction. Nostradamus was in his late 40s when, it is told, he frequently went into a meditative state and had visions of the future. Born Michel de Notredame on 14 December 1503 in St Remy, France, he was the oldest of five sons. Nostradamus who lived in France in the 16th century, made many accurate forecasts, including the two World Wars. Nostradamus is famous for his predictions that many believe have been proved true by past events. What did Nostradamus predict for 2012, the end of the world, or a new beginning ?

The 2012 Galactic Alignment theory of John Major Jenkins has become quite popular, he has invested decades of research into decoding the ancient Maya and their calender.

This Galactic Alignment occurs only once every 26,000 years, and was what the ancient Maya were pointing to with the 2012 end-date of their calendar.

Over 2,000 years ago the early Maya saw that the sun, on the winter solstice, was slowly moving toward the heart of the galaxy. They suspected that the world would go through a transformation when the solar and the galactic planes aligned. They made their calendar to target when the cosmic alignment would maximize, and that time is 2012. We are lucky that the ancient Mayans who made the 2012 calendar left carved monuments for us to decode, and that they have survived centuries, so that we can know exactly what they believed about 2012.

There is only one ancient stone monument with Mayan inscriptions that tells the end of the world, Tortuguero Monument #6. By decoding its characters archaeologist’s where able to determine that the end of the Long Count Calendar Cycle is December 21, 2012.

I don’t take this very seriously and my opinion is that life and all on earth will continue to move on as they usually did and that people and the Internet have greatly exaggerated the theorie. Some people really believe that some sort of disaster will occur on the solstice and are storing emergency supplies of food and building underground homes to protect themselves. On the 21st of December 2012 I will still be nervous to find out what happens. If nothing happens I would have been right all along and if something is to occur I would be proved wrong. Who knows?
